Disks fail, files get deleted by mistake, an update breaks the site, or a provider closes your account. A backup is the only real insurance against all of these. But a backup that lives only on the server disappears with the server.
The 3-2-1 rule
- 3 copies: the live data and two backups
- 2 different media: for example the server and your computer
- 1 copy somewhere else: for example Google Drive or S3 storage
What to back up?
Site files, databases, web server settings, SSL certificates and email. For game servers, the world and settings.
An automatic setup with Captanel
In backup settings, choose when: daily, on chosen weekdays or every few hours. Choose where: your computer, Google Drive, another server or S3-compatible storage (R2, B2, Wasabi). Backups can be encrypted with a password. If your computer was off at backup time, it catches up when it starts.
Test your restore
A backup you have never restored is not a backup. Try restoring now and then. Captanel backs up the current state before restoring, so even a wrong restore can be undone.
A backup for your computer too
Captanel's recovery backup stores your server list, passwords and settings encrypted. If your computer breaks, everything comes back in one step on the new one.
