Disks: parts and extra disks

You can split the server’s disk into parts like on a computer and install the game on one part and other things on another. If a part fills up, only what is on it stops; the others are not affected. Open the Disks tab on the server screen.

Creating a virtual part (free, on any server)

  1. Press Disks → Create a virtual part.
  2. Enter a name (lowercase letters, digits and hyphens; e.g. game) and a size (GB), then press OK.
  3. The card shows “game · virtual part”; the free space on the main disk drops by that much.
  • At least 2 GB must stay free on the main disk after the part is created.
  • The size shown on the card is a little smaller (5 GB → 4.8 GB): the file system’s own records take up space.
  • It can be enlarged with Enlarge; its contents are kept. Shrinking is not possible (it could lose data).

Extra disk

  • On a server linked to Hetzner: press Rent an extra disk from Hetzner and enter a name and size (at least 10 GB). The monthly cost is shown and nothing is rented before you confirm; the disk is attached, formatted and made ready to use.
  • With another provider: attach the disk in the provider’s panel (Volume / Block Storage) and press Refresh on Disks. The disk appears under “Attached but unused disks”: Format and use (empty disk) or Mount and use (formatted disk; its contents are kept).

Choosing a disk when installing

When installing a game, pick the part in the Where to install? box below the form; all of the game’s files are written there. The install output shows a “Install location: /mnt/captanel/…” line, and the Disks card says “Installed on this disk”.

Removing and deleting

  • When you remove a game with Remove, its files are deleted from that part and the part is emptied.
  • If a game you removed still shows on the card, press Unbind next to it.
  • Delete part only works when nothing is installed on it; the part and everything in it are deleted and its space returns to the main disk.
  • A game already installed on the main disk is not moved to another disk; it must be removed and installed again.
